Newfoundlands

Newfoundland dogs , what are they?

Big, furry, slobbery, lug of a dog. Known to do water rescue, draft (pull carts), search and rescue… and drool buckets. A very mellow, gentle, and loyal dog.

AKC accepted colors are black, bronze, grey and landseer (black and white). With a double-coat and webbed feet, these dogs often make excellent swimmers. Males can weigh around 150 pounds, females around 120.

No doubt the Newfie pups are cute. But please remember that your little buddy will grow up to be a big, strong dog that you will need to be able to control. Training is best started when they’re little, eager to please and easy to handle. It’s much easier to train a young pup than to un-train an older dog’s bad habits.

If you are a neat freak, the Newf is not for you. Most Newfies shed year-round, and blow their coat profusely twice a year (spring and fall). Regularly grooming is a must as they have massive amounts of hair over the course of a large body. This is not even taking into account how they love the rain and will often come in muddy… to paint your walls a nice shade of brown with their tails and sides of the body.

Most Newfie lovers feel the sweet temperament and loving cow-eyes of our furbabies more than offset the extra work that they entail. We urge everyone to do a lot of research into the
Newfoundland before they become owned by one. It takes a special person or family to be owned by this special breed. For more in-depth info about the Newfoundland , please see the Newfoundland Club of America’s website at
